In Tokyo today there is a forty-something man who never made enough consistent income from his technical gig work to hold down a wife and family. He may overspend on gadgets in an apartment the size of a closet, working catch-as-catch can 70 to 90 hours a week to support himself. There is no time for women or children.
The Japanese have awesome robotics, yes. They had the first drone operated automobile. They manufacture and invent a lot of highly wonderous gadgetry. They have high performing AI. They have technical craftsmanship and design that is often the envy of US engineers.
Their economy had concurrent trouble with national debt levers that lead to a national culture who put years of grinding work ahead of everything. For at least two generations they chose to forsake the advancement of family in work earnings exchange. Their population is now aging to death and is not replacing itself with new children. They’re so overworked, many doubt they’re noticing.
Young men in American culture are witnessing a shift in employment losses to Generative AI and AI production adoption. They’re not in the streets yet with tiki torches yelling, “YOU. WILL NOT. REPLACE US!!”.
However, it won’t be long now.
